Justin Matherly

Justin Matherly (b. 1972, West Islip, New York, US) is known for his large-scale sculptures referencing Greek and Roman antiquity. Cast in concrete, gypsum, fibreglass resin, and other contemporary materials, the works allude to corporeal and historical decay and entropy, eternal regeneration and continuity.

Matherly’s work has been included in several international exhibitions, including Lustwarande ’19 –Delirious, Park De Oude Warande, The Netherlands (2019); Kunstler und Dichter (Artists and Poets), Vienna Secession, Vienna, Austria (2015); A Triple Tour: Works from the Pinault Collection, La Conciergerie, Paris (2014); the Public Art Fund’s 2012 show Common Ground at City Hall Park and the Sculpture Center’s In Practice Projects (2010). In 2017, Matherly presented his major work, Nietzsche’s Rock (2017), at Skulptur Projekte Münster, Germany.

His work is represented in major museums and private collections worldwide, including the Helga de Alvear Foundation, Cáceres, Spain, and the Nasher Museum of Art, North Carolina. The artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, US.
