Tomaso Binga (b. 1931, Bianca Pucciarelli, Salerno, Italy) is an author of visual, sound and performance poetry. In 1971, she assumed a male name as a sign of protest against the inequalities that characterise the male-female relationship. She has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions; among these are the women-only exhibitions curated by Romana Loda (Coazione a mostrare, Magma, Il volto sinistro dell’arte), the exhibitions and performances realised with Verita Monselles (Litanie Lauretane, Poesia Muta, Ti scrivo solo di domenica), the exhibition Materializzazione del linguaggio, curated by Mirella Bentivoglio on the occasion of the 1978 Venice Biennale.
Recent exhibitions include the retrospective Autoritratto di un matrimonio (Museo Laboratorio d’Arte Contemporanea, Università di Roma La Sapienza), solo shows at the Federico J. Klemm Foundation in Buenos Aires (2006), Viaggio nella parola in La Spezia (2007), Zitta tu… non parlare! At Sala Santa Rita in Rome (2014) and Tomaso Binga: A Silenced Victory at Mimosa House in London (2019). In 2019, she took part in the exhibition The Unexpected Subject. 1978 Art and Feminism in Italy (Frigoriferi Milanesi).
Since 1974, she has directed the Roman cultural association Lavatoio Contumaciale, which deals with poetry, visual arts, literature, music and multimedia. Her works are in important museum and foundation collections in Italy and abroad.
